PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Translations is an immersive performance for small audiences designed to be experienced with the "non-visual senses." Accessible to both blind and sighted audiences, Translations invites everyone to hear, feel, smell, and imagine live dance. Paired one-to-one with a performer, audience members use everything beyond vision to perceive the dance which takes place all around them, unfolding through verbal description, touch, currents of air moving around them, delightful smells, and the mesmerizing sounds of moving bodies. Translations offers a one-of-a-kind sensory journey.
Performing Translations required a new perception of what it is to perform and communicate in effective and impactful ways. A truly unique and intimate experience as a cast and with our audiences. A process of community care in rehearsals and performance which I’ve never experienced before.
Created by Vancouver’s All Bodies Dance Project in collaboration with VocalEye and artistic consultants from the blind community. Presented by Springboard Performance’s Fluid Fest in collaboration with Inside Out Theatre.
"It feels as though I’ve suddenly been transported into the centre of the work. My first inclination is to draw a mental picture of the bodies dancing, but I challenge myself to just focus on the sensation of wind on my skin." - The Dance Current
Media: Expanding Their Reach; All Bodies Dance Project investigates sightless dance. - A review featured in The Dance Current
