LEÑA RESIDENCY

Director, Choreographer

January 2023

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

LEÑA artist residency is an artist-run, multi-disciplinary, gathering place on Galiano Island, BC, for practicing artists and creatives in search of focused self-directed work weeks of exploration, research, or process.

In 2023 as the director of Corps Bara I was accepted to a week-long residency with our company of six dancers. The residency was funded by Canada Heritage in support of our project Grief Marked.

During the week we created the choreography for the work, researching our own grief, metaphors of grief and also spending time decompressing in the beautiful environment of forest and ocean on the island. These environmental themes were threaded through the work and the dedicated time for community building allowed us to build trust and a shared lens through which to understand and communicate the work.

Creating in a concentrated way, living and eating together and exploring a personally and collectively meaningful work was easily one of the highlights of my career so far.
